2026 Quarter Horse

Live racing is underway at Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, where the 2026 American Quarter Horse, Paint, and Appaloosa meet runs through November 17 across 28 race days and more than $5 million in purses. The track sits on a mile oval about 30 miles northeast of Tulsa, close enough that live horse racing near Tulsa amounts to a half-hour drive and an afternoon at the rail that still ends well before dinner.

Whether you have followed the sport for decades or have never set foot on a backstretch, the back half of the meet is the stretch worth planning around, because the October stakes calendar brings the richest races of the year to Claremore.

Why Quarter Horse Racing Hits Differently

Most people picture horse racing in Oklahoma as Thoroughbreds going a mile or more. Quarter Horse racing is a different sport. Horses break from the gate and run flat out in a straight line, often over 350 yards, and the whole thing is finished in under 20 seconds. There is no pace strategy to unwind and no stretch run to wait on. The gate opens, and roughly 18 seconds later somebody has won.

That compression is what makes the fall meet easy to recommend to first-timers. You do not need to read a past performance chart to follow what just happened. Races come every 25 to 30 minutes, so a card of eight or nine races fills an afternoon without ever dragging.

The 2026 quarter horse racing season also carries real money. Average daily purses run near $150,000, and the stakes schedule includes the Black Gold program, whose fillies division is the richest race in the country for 2-year-old fillies. The Oklahoma-bred Mystery Futurity and Derby carries $100,000 added. New this year is the Will Rogers Oaks, a $50,000-added race in October open to all 3-year-old fillies.

The 2026 Will Rogers Downs Racing Schedule

The meet runs Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays through November 17, with a noon Central first post. Sunday cards were added in late September, which matters if you work a standard week and want to catch racing without taking a day off.

Weekday racing is part of the appeal. Crowds are lighter than a Saturday night at a Thoroughbred track, seats are easy to come by, and there is room to walk the apron and get close to the gate. Entries and results are posted on the live horse racing page ahead of each card, so it is worth checking which day carries a stakes race before you pick a date.

What a Race Day Looks Like

The grandstand covers 60,000 square feet with 2,700 seats, split between covered sections and open-air seating, so the weather rarely decides whether you go. An outdoor patio runs along the front. Fans who want a table can reserve daily or seasonal seating in the Turf Club, which sits above the finish line with food service and its own wagering windows.

A first visit is simpler than it looks. Programs list every horse, jockey, and trainer for the card. A $2 wager gets you in the game, and the tellers at the windows are used to walking new bettors through their first ticket. Paddock viewing before each race is open to everyone, which is where a lot of people find they enjoy watching the horses more than the betting.

A Strong 2025 Season Set the Bar

Last year's meet gave the track something to build on. Will Rogers Downs ran 276 races over the 2025 season, 231 for Quarter Horses and 45 mixed-breed Paint and Appaloosa events, and total handle topped $4.5 million. That was an 8% increase over 2024. Average field size landed at 8.45 horses, which is a healthy number and the reason races stayed competitive.

“We were pleased to see our average field size and total handle grow from last season,” said John Lies, racing secretary and track announcer at Will Rogers Downs, who noted that races were deep and wins were spread across dozens of different trainers.

The season also produced a standout. Amarillis, an Oklahoma-bred 2-year-old sorrel filly, went 4-for-4 and earned $228,901 on her way to the Black Gold Fillies Futurity championship. Roman Cruz led all jockeys with 53 wins, and Jesus Ruiz took trainer honors with 17.

There Is More Here Than the Track

Racing is the reason to come on a Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday, but it is not the only thing on the property.

The casino floor runs 250 e-games and stays open until 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Collective Kitchen(s) handles the food side with American comfort cooking. The Dog Iron Saloon is the late piece of the night, with live country and Americana acts most Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. Shows are 21 and up, and there is no cover.

That combination is what turns a race card into a full day. Post time is noon, the last race is done by mid-afternoon, and the rest of the property is just getting started.

Stay on Property at the KOA Campground

Anyone driving in from out of town can skip the hotel search. The Tulsa NE / Will Rogers Downs KOA Journey sits on the property, within walking distance of both the grandstand and the casino floor, which means no second drive after the last race.

The campground is built for real rigs and long stays:

  • Pull-through sites that handle rigs up to 80 feet, with 50-amp full hookups and Wi-Fi throughout
  • Shower facilities, laundry, and an on-site storm shelter
  • A fenced KampK9 dog park, playground, and picnic tables at shaded sites
  • A snack bar, event space, and 24-hour security

Booking a night or two turns a single race card into a weekend, and it puts you close enough to walk back to your site when the racing ends.

Things to Do in Claremore, OK

Claremore gives the trip more than one reason to exist. Historic Route 66 runs straight through town, and the Will Rogers Memorial Museum honors the humorist the track is named for. The J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum holds one of the largest privately assembled firearms collections in the world. Downtown Claremore carries the antique shops and local restaurants that come with a Route 66 main street.

Pair a Sunday afternoon at the races with a morning in town and the drive from Tulsa, Bartlesville, or northwest Arkansas earns itself back.

Pick a Date Before November 17

The meet has weeks left, and the October stakes calendar is the strongest stretch of it. Check the racing schedule at Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs, pick a Sunday if you want the easiest day to get there, and reserve a Turf Club table or a KOA site if you plan to make a weekend of it. First post is at noon.
